Benefits and Uses of Clay Tiles in Construction Works

 Introduction

The structural clay tiles are the kind of burned-clay construction materials that are used in constructing roofs, walls, and flooring for structural as well as non-structural purposes, particularly in fireproofing applications. These are also called structural terra cotta, building tile, clay block, and hollow tile; the material is an extruded clay mold having a substantial depth that allows it to lay in the same manner as the other clay or concrete masonry.

Manufacturing

Clay tiles are also called roof tiles. These tiles are manufactured using the similar method as used for bricks. But, the tiles are lighter and thinner. For the manufacturing of clay tiles, the clay used should be highly plastic. After being moulded into the required shape, they are burnt at 1300° C. In this burning procedure, colouring admixtures can be used. The burning process is generally carried out in kilns.

Qualities of roofing tiles

  • Good clay tiles are free from flaws and cracks.
  • The shape and size should be according to standard dimensions.
  • They should have a uniform texture throughout the surface.
  • They should possess high durability.
  • The water absorption should be less than 15 percent.

Uses of roofing tiles

  • They are used for low-cost small buildings.
  • They are used to enhance the aesthetic look of a building.
  • They are widely used for Buddha temples in northern India and China. These tiles are one of the central attractions of such temples.

Benefits of roofing tiles

  1. Longevity

Clay roof tiles tend to have an extended lifespan than many other construction materials. Roofs made up of these tiles can have a functioning life as long as around a hundred years.

  1. Low Maintenance

In comparison to other roofing materials, the clay tiles need less maintenance. This can reduce the total cost of the ownership.

  1. Durability

Clay tiles do not decay, and they are insect and fire-resistant.

  1. Insulation

Free air circulation takes place beneath these tiles, which help in regulating rooftop temperatures; this helps to maintain temperatures inside the home.

  1. Weather resistance

When extreme conditions arise, other materials contract and expand to a greater degree, clay is able to maintain the roof’s quality by resisting the most extreme cold and hot weather events. They are also apt to withstand the harmful ultraviolet radiations from the sun.

  1. Aesthetics

Mediterranean and Spanish designs inspire clay tile style. This appearance rounds off a variety of sidings. For instance, a clay tile roof can modify the look of stone or brick sidings, making it consistent with the popular trending design styles for residences.

Conclusion

Owing the superior quality and strength of clay roof tiles over any other building materials is a wise choice for anyone who is planning to build a house. Moreover, builders prefer to use clay tiles for their construction projects. A good clay roof tile will have a very long life. Clay roof tiles come in an incredibly diverse range of styles, colours, and shapes, something that is lacking in the concrete roof tiles.
